Palaniuk Leads Wire-to-Wire to Win Bassmaster® Elite

Posted 8/12/2013

WADDINGTON, N.Y., August 12, 2013 -- Yamaha Pro Brandon Palaniuk led wire-to-wire in the Bassmaster Elite St. Lawrence River Showdown tournament to win with a four-day total of 88 pounds, 12 ounces.  The victory carries not only a $100,000 first prize but also a guaranteed berth in the 2014 Bassmaster Classic® world championship.

The tournament was the Idaho angler’s second career Elite win – he led wire-to-wire in winning at Bull Shoals Reservoir last season – and he became the third Yamaha Pro to win a Bassmaster Elite event his season.  Todd Faircloth won the Series opener on the Sabine River, and Keith Combs won the second event on Falcon Reservoir.

Although the tournament was headquartered on the scenic and fish-rich St. Lawrence River, Palaniuk piloted his Yamaha V MAX SHO® - powered Skeeter more than 100 miles each morning to the Chaumont Bay area of Lake Ontario where he could catch larger smallmouth.  The 200-mile round trip left him scarcely three hours of actual fishing time, but he rarely needed more than an hour to catch his fish.

“It was a gamble, but the big smallmouth were holding on long points and ready and willing to bite,” noted Palaniuk, 25.  “On Sunday, the final morning, I caught more than 20 pounds in the first 45 minutes, and I actually started the long ride back to the weigh-in at 12:15.”

The Yamaha Pro caught his bass on a drop-shot rig, using a plastic minnow lure.  For the tournament, his 20 bass averaged more than four pounds each.  His daily catches weighed 20-11, 21-15, 20-9, and 23-5.

Fellow Yamaha Pro Cliff Pirch, fishing his first season in the Elite Series, finished fourth with 78 pounds, 6 ounces. The Payson, Ariz. angler should also qualify for the 2014 Bassmaster Classic because of his current 17th place ranking in the B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year standings.

The final event of the 2013 Elite Series will be held at Lake St. Clair in Michigan Aug. 22-25.  The lake, located near Detroit, is considered one of the nation’s premier smallmouth fisheries.
