Fishing News Yamaha Pro Michael Iaconelli Wins Bassmaster® Elite Tournament on Delaware River Posted 8/11/2014 WINS BY MARGIN OF EIGHT POUNDS Philadelphia, Pa., August 11, 2014 – Yamaha Pro Michael Iaconelli brought in a final day’s catch of 10 pounds, 14 ounces Sunday to win the Bassmaster® Elite tournament on the Delaware River, water he has fished since he was a youngster. His four-day total of 47 pounds, 14 ounces gave him a winning margin of eight pounds, something extremely unusual in the tough Elite competition where only ounces often separate the top finishers. “The key for me was understanding how the tide changes affected the bass on the river,” Iaconelli noted. “Because of my experience on the Delaware, I was able to catch fish in different areas on low, mid, and even high tides. For many of the competitors here, the daily tidal fluctuation of nearly seven feet was something they’d never experienced before.” That meant a lot of running for the Yamaha Pro, who fished both the main river as well as several tributary creeks as he “chased” the incoming or outgoing tide. Although he caught the majority of his bass on finesse jigs and drop shots, a daily tide chart was equally as important in telling him where to fish at specific times of the day. Starting the tournament in 21st place after the opening day, Iaconelli took over the lead on the second day and never relinquished it. Fellow Yamaha Pro Bill Lowen finished seventh with a four-day total of 34 pounds. The win gives Iaconelli an automatic entry into the 2015 Bassmaster Classic®, an event he won in 2003.
